Succulents are endemic to environments where water is limiting and/or seasonal. They are found all over the world. In different parts of the world different plant families have evolved to fill similar arid niches. For example Cacti and Agave are the most conspicuous succulents in the new world while Aloes, Euphorbia and milkweeds are the old world succulents. Southern Africa, home to some of the worlds most fascinating animal life (Zebra, giraffe, lions, ostridge, etc.), is also blessed with an unusually rich array of fascinating succulent plants. As a succulent enthusiast it's very rewarding to see succulents in their native habitat. I was lucky enough to visit South Africa in the winter of 2005-2006. Click here for pictures.
